Only the Best Artificial Turf for the New Immaculate Conception School Playground in Traverse, Michigan
Traverse, MI — After a century of continuous guidance provided to generations of students, the Immaculate Conception School of Traverse City, Michigan, needed a replacement and an upgrade. Along with a brand-new building, the school also required the best artificial turf by SYNLawn for a modern and safe playground for kids of all ages to enjoy. With a prominent placement right location in downtown Traverse City, the school wanted a ground cover that would look good year-round with minimal maintenance. Artificial turf from SYNLawn Michigan was selected since it provides a safe play surface that remains green through the winter while draining rapidly in rainy and snowy weather. With the grand opening of the new school set for August, the SYNLawn installers had to work quickly to wrap everything up in time.
One of Northern Michigan’s Largest Artificial Turf Projects
Natural grass is challenging to keep thriving in sports fields and playgrounds in any climate due to heavy daily foot traffic. However, Northern Michigan’s long winters and humid summers make maintaining turf particularly challenging. SYNLawn’s SYNAugustine 547 turf used for the athletic field and main playground can handle all these conditions and more. The installers selected crushed limestone as the base for supporting the artificial turf since fast drainage is a must to deal with the heavy regular rainfall. SYNLawn’s 2-inch Fall Pad™ was also selected to be installed under the playground equipment to minimize the risk of injuries from falls. For the preschool playground, the slightly softer and thicker SYNAugustine X47 (link) was chosen to create as much cushion as possible.
Distinctive Playground Design
With the visibility of the playgrounds of the school, the SYNLawn Michigan installers offered a novel new installation option for a boost of style. The artificial turf was cut into 7.5 feet wide sections and alternated in opposite directions to create the look of a freshly cut lawn. This distinctive playground design was inspired by SYNLawn Chesapeake Bay installers who use this technique to create beautiful aesthetics and smooth transitions.
With over 100 posts in place for playground and athletic equipment support, cutting the turf for a perfect fit took more time than it does for a typical lawn installation. High winds whipping over the fields and grounds can make it difficult to keep artificial turf firmly secured to the ground. The installation team anticipated this problem and brought along plenty of additional anchors and fasteners to make sure there’s no lifting at the edges or seams.
SYNLawn is proud of our team members in Michigan who worked hard on this installation to complete it in just two weeks. The SYNLawn Michigan team even reports that they’ve already received another playground project request in the area.
