Rapid City Dinosaur Park Upgraded to Provide a Safer and More Accessible Tourist Destination

Rapid City, SD — The scenic Black Hills in South Dakota are home to a unique park where imagination meets the prehistoric past. Rapid City Dinosaur Park has been a must-see attraction since 1936. Located on a sandstone ridge inside the park are seven massive replicas of dinosaurs that roamed the planet during the Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous periods. SYNLawn Mountain West – South Dakota was selected to install new surfacing around the dinosaurs and along the pedestrian paths to make the park safer and more accessible.

Upgrading the Park with Synthetic Surfacing

Before the renovation project, visitors with limited mobility weren’t able to access Rapid City Dinosaur Park. SYNLawn Mountain West was selected by Tallgrass Landscape Architects to help create a safe and easily accessible environment for guests of all ages and abilities to learn about the area’s prehistoric past and take advantage of the incredible views overlooking the city. SYNLawn Mountain West hand mixed and loaded 25,850 pounds of Poured in Place (PIP) synthetic surfacing to build accessible pedestrian routes, enhance the park’s safety features, and install new and upgraded tourist amenities.

SYNLawn’s PIP surfacing system is available in a variety of color options that offer a colorful and smooth surface. For this project, the team installed multiple colors for the rubber top layer like beige, light grey, charcoal grey, eggshell, and red. These colors complement the natural beauty of the area. The PIP materials are ADA-compliant and wheelchair friendly. The cushion layer will also protect children from potential falls.
