Creating a Safer and More Accessible Outdoor Play Environment
Before the renovation, the playground surfacing consisted of messy wood chips, making the area less accessible to disabled students. The wood chips also required extra time and effort from the school building engineer to ensure the surfacing material stayed in place since the wood chips easily stick to things when wet, and they have to be regularly replaced due to decomposition.

It was designed to help reduce the risk of common play injuries and lessen the impact of falls with its low-pile, low-friction grass blades combined with an energy-absorbing cushion. SYNPlay 48 also has an ASTM Class A Fire-Rating and IPEMA certification.
The project involved the creation of two separate play spots. The playground features numerous slides, climbing walls and poles for more interactive play. Both installations incorporated the school’s colors in the design, and SYNLawn Mountain West Montana installed Trample Zone™ turf pads for enhanced safety and increased durability in high-traffic areas of the playground, like the slides and swings. Both installations are now easily accessible to students with mobility issues as a result of the smooth new surfacing.
