Fremont, WI — Not every playground is created equal, so childcare providers need to evaluate the safety and accessibility of their existing play environments. St. Paul Child Care Center needed a better play space for the children in their care aged 2.5 years to 11 years. Building a Safer and More Inclusive Outdoor Play Space
The previous playground surfacing used at St. Paul Child Care Wisconsin Daycare Center was wood fiber mulch that was often damp and dirty due to drainage issues. The space offered limited activities for the kids. Before starting the renovation project, SYNLawn Milwaukee discussed the vision the school had for the new playground. They wanted to create a multi-activity play space to help foster creativity and imagination.
Improving safety and accessibility was also a priority and the new design needed to meet state fall zone requirements. Every year, more than 200,000 children end up in the emergency room as a result of playground injuries. Artificial turf is a safer option than natural surfacing since it has been proven to reduce injury and it helps lessen the impact of falls since it absorbs the shock better than natural grass.
The new playground design incorporated a multi-use path, a small basketball court, a four-square design, additional ball playing areas, a sandbox, a funnel ball structure, a gathering space with a seated wall, and a shade sail to keep the kids cool and protected.
