Newcastle, WY — More than 200,000 children end up in the emergency room every year as a result of playground injuries. It’s important for schools to upgrade playgrounds and outdoor equipment to create safer and more inclusive play environments for students of all ages and abilities. Newcastle Elementary School hired SYNLawn Mountain West Wyoming to create a safe play space and give their playground a makeover by installing SYNLawn Playground Grass, the safest synthetic playground surfacing available.
Upgrading the Playground with Sustainable Playground Grass
The co-op director of the local school board was pleased with a playground renovation that SYNLawn Mountain West Wyoming worked on for a neighboring school district, so she knew they were the best choice to bring Newcastle Elementary School’s playground up to code to meet safety requirements. This required replacing the existing playground surface materials made of mulch and pea gravel with SYNLawn’s premium surfacing products. The project needed to be completed before the start of the new school year, so SYNLawn Mountain West Wyoming brought in three of their work crews to complete the upgrade on time.
SYNLawn Mountain West Wyoming used approximately 8,900 square feet of SYNAugustine X47 to transform the play area. This sustainable playground turf option provides unmatched safety, softness, and durability. SYNAugustine X47 is USDA Certified Bio-Preferred Product and made with SYNLawn’s exclusive EnviroLoc+™ backing system, which replaces a large portion of the petroleum-based polyol with renewable soybeans. It’s a safer surfacing product for kids since SYNAugustine X47 is made with Super Yarn™ technology, featuring heat reflective, anti-static, Sanitized®, and non-abrasive grass blades.
SYNLawn Mountain West Wyoming also installed a combination of SYNPlay 48 playground grass in orange and gray. The colorful design of SYNPlay transformed the playground into a creative and fun environment. and will withstand the daily foot traffic of the heavily active playground. It is also designed to reduce the risk of common play injuries and lessen the impact of falls since it uses low-pile, low-friction grass blades combined with an energy-absorbing cushion. To complete the installation, the team also installed Brock PowerBase/Play™ shock pads plus Envirofill 16-30 and 30-50 infills.
Additional benefits from upgrading to synthetic surfacing in the playground area include:
- Cleaner play environment since artificial turf does not get muddy.
- Less outdoor allergy issues for students, unlike natural surfacing materials.
- No more health and safety risks of pesticides since none are needed for the maintenance of faux grass.
- Reduces the school district’s liability risk from the safety hazard of falls caused by the previous surfacing materials.
- No more maintenance attention is required to keep the play space clean, unlike the mulch and pea gravel that staff constantly had to clean up.
- More accessible to students in wheelchairs or those with other mobility issues.
It was an all-hands-on-deck project for SYNLawn Mountain West Wyoming. They were proud to create a safe, inclusive, and sustainable playground for generations of students to enjoy.
