an Diego, CA — Jamie Neagle and the team from SYNLawn San Diego recently completed a high-end installation of artificial grass to integrate culture and elegance with the Monsaraz Hotel courtyard. Less than 5 minutes from downtown San Diego and steps away from Fisherman’s Landing, this hotel is part of the Tapestry Collection by Hilton, designed to be the intersection of original travel and unique stays.
The Monsaraz Hotel opened in June of 2021 with a vision to bring together socialization and an artful way of life. The new courtyard captures this independent spirit while remaining consistent with Hilton’s portfolio of more than 65 original hotels. The property’s unique style and vibrant personality encourage guests to explore the local cuisine and culture of the San Diego harbor.
Designing an Elegant Outdoor Space with artificial grass
The 2,500 square foot courtyard uses the perfect combination of SYNLawn’s SYNRye 200 and SYNSport artificial grass varieties and artificial green wall panels from Calico Greens to create an elegant outdoor space. The common area was constructed over a subterranean parking deck, forcing a unique non-standard construction method, including SYNPour, a poured-in-place product leveling layer. The organic design mirrors a mural created and painted by local artist Janie Rochfort which comes complete with its artificial living wall.
Wimmer Yamada & Caughey Architecture and Landscaping selected SYNLawn San Diego because of their expertise and ability to conceive and execute creative solutions. The project developer, Lamming Co, has been pleased with the results from Neagle’s team on previous projects, including some of San Diego’s most iconic hospitality properties, and has plans for more locations using SYNLawn artificial grass.
A Creative Approach for a Casual Atmosphere
The construction of the courtyard required a highly creative approach to marry a casual yet artful atmosphere posing unique challenges for installers due to the underground parking garage located directly underneath the courtyard area. Mrs. Neagle worked hand-in-hand with the architect to develop the river-like forms of multi-colored artificial grass that run through the outdoor courtyard space. ADA compliance also demanded the two turf styles be of equal heights to eliminate potential trip hazards. The effort posed an interesting challenge for installers who used the PIP rubber to build up the base surface an additional 1/4″ for areas where SYNSport would be used to meet the ADA requirement.
An Artful Approach to Celebrating Heritage
With construction complete, the Monsaraz Hotel now offers visitors a relaxing and artful courtyard that stands out among the busy hotel district of San Diego. The artful approach to this project, from tone-on-tone turf selections to the bold accent of an artificial living wall, is what truly sets places like The Monsaraz Hotel apart.
Point Loma in San Diego shares roots in Portugal and hosts the city’s oldest ethnic festival, Festa do Espirito Santo, to celebrate its Portuguese heritage. The Monsaraz Hotel courtyard now embodies the culture of both places, from tile work to original design.
