Cambridge, MA — Kendall Center, a community hub located in Cambridge’s Kendall Square, found a creative way to utilize unused rooftop space by creating a rooftop oasis for the employees of its corporate tenants, guests of the Boston Marriott Cambridge and the public to enjoy. In addition to offering a premier restaurant, retail, hotel and public park spaces, Kendall Center is also home to the world’s leading tech, biotech and life sciences companies such as Google, Akamai Technologies, MIT, Novartis, The Broad Institute, Biogen and Microsoft. Boston Properties, the developer of Kendall Center and BrightView Landscape, worked closely with New England Turf Store (NETS) on a redevelopment project to create the Urban Park Roof Garden.
Reclaiming Urban Space with Rooftop Amenities
As part of its collaboration with the Cambridge Redevelopment Authority, Boston Properties wanted to remodel the rooftop of Kendall Square to provide the community with a beautiful outdoor green space. Public green spaces are limited in cities, so it’s beneficial to take advantage of unused spaces like rooftops.
Boston Properties and BrightView Landscape hired the artificial turf installation experts at NETS to help design and create a rooftop oasis featuring first-rate amenities such as a community garden, a pickleball court and premium turf landscaping. NETS was hired due to its excellent reputation and extensive experience in commercial installations.
Landscaping with Synthetic Turf
To create the rooftop green space, the NETS team installed 7,000 square feet of premium turf products, including:
- SYNAugustine 347, the softest and most comfortable variety of faux grass that offers a natural look and a realistic feel.
- SYNPour™ Poured-in-Place (PIP) system, a soft and smooth surface that enhances safety and durability. It also allows for accessibility for individuals in wheelchairs and walkers. This product was also used to create turf mounds.
- Laykold® surfacing to create the custom pickleball court.
- Envirofill®, the latest in artificial grass infill technology and innovation.
In addition to using the cleanest and safest synthetic turf for this project, these SYNLawn products also ensure safety with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) fire ratings. Plus, choosing products from SYNLawn is an eco-friendlier option since our exclusive plant-based EnviroLoc+™ backing system replaces up to 60% of petroleum-based polyol with renewable soybeans.
NETS is proud to provide the Cambridge community with an innovative green space that offers endless relaxation, entertainment, and socialization opportunities.
