Pet Turf in San Diego Gives Humane Society Dogs More Room to Play

Matthew Wagner October 15th, 2026

San Diego, CA – For the hundreds of dogs living at the San Diego Humane Society, time outdoors on green space is crucial. It helps reduce stress and supports their physical and mental health, which can improve their chances of finding a forever home. To give these dogs a better place to play, SYNLawn San Diego teamed up with general contracting firm Johnson and Jennings to upgrade the shelter’s adoption center with plant-based pet turf in San Diego.

Enhancing Shelter Spaces With Safe, Sustainable Pet Turf

This renovation was an especially meaningful project for the SYNLawn San Diego team. They designed and built three large agility yards, giving the dogs more room to exercise and play, along with 15 outdoor kennels. Across these spaces, the team installed 5,310 square feet of Pet Platinum, a sustainable synthetic turf designed for pets of all sizes that offers outstanding safety, durability, and cleanliness.

Pet Platinum features SYNLawn’s exclusive plant-based EnviroLoc+™ Backing System, created from renewable resources like soybean oil. This eco-friendly, multi-layer system locks in durable turf fibers and extends the life of the turf. It also works with Pet Platinum’s Super Drain+™ Technology to deliver exceptional drainage, keeping the surface dry, preventing muddy messes, and making clean-up quick and easy so the spaces stay sanitary.

The turf is also engineered with Super Yarn™ Technology, which includes Sanitized® Antimicrobial Technology, StatBlock™ anti-static protection, and DualChill™ IR-reflective properties. Together, these features help keep the yards and kennels comfortable, cool, and sanitary under the Southern California sun. The durable Super Yarn™ fibers stand up to energetic shelter pups while keeping a soft, natural texture.

Why Artificial Grass Works Better for Shelter Dogs

Switching from natural grass to pet-friendly artificial grass brings the shelter additional benefits:

  • Staff no longer spend time watering and mowing, freeing up more time for the dogs.
  • The turf stays green without irrigation, conserving water in drought-prone Southern California.
  • The risk of dogs picking up pests like fleas and ticks is reduced.
  • Unsightly brown spots and worn patches won’t develop the way they do on natural grass.

Elevating the Adoption Center Lobby With Calico Greens

The team also refreshed the adoption center lobby with a new message board wall featuring an upscale artificial plant panel from Calico Greens. The staff uses this board to announce new adoptions and share messages encouraging visitors to open their hearts and homes to shelter pets. The new green wall helps the board stand out and catch the eye of everyone who walks in.

Calico Greens panels are made from high-quality materials for lasting durability and beauty. The faux living wall mimics the colors, shading, dimensions, and movement of real plants, creating a more vibrant, welcoming space for potential adopters. It will also benefit staff over the long term, since it never needs watering, and it’s a safer choice than a living plant wall because all Calico Greens products are fire-rated.
